The picture the way it looked on her Maybelleine New York Chicks with attitude sampler CD that was released in July 2004 when Taylor was 14. I recently read an old newspaper article about it and it said she was at Taco bell when she found out that they picked her song for the CD. She was so excited she started screaming and everyone stared at her like she was crazy. lol It also said she wrote the song on a rainy January weekend when none of her friends called her. The article seemed to suggest that she wrote it in 2004 (because that's when it's from although she always said she wrote it when she was 12) but I think she actually wrote it when she was 13 because what are the odds that it was in the very first month of the year that she learned to play guitar or that she wrote and recorded it, found out about the Maybellene CD, got picked for it and rexorded it again within a month? It's possible, but unlikely. Plus, it reminds me of the videos from the best day where she was playing guitar in her room because she talks about her friends being mean in that part (that was the weekend that she all asked them if they wanted to go to the mall but they all said they were busy so she went with her mom instead and they saw all 6 of them there together so her mom took her somewhere else) and it's hard to see but they were labeled January 2003. It makes me wonder if she was playing The outside for her family in that clip right after she wrote it.
lynleet09 says... WAIT A SECOND!!! My dad's friend has an old copy of CWA (apparently he was friends with another woman featured on it) and it says in the liner notes for TO "Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in February 2004. So , THAT was what she was at Sigma for.
Hmm, that's interesting to know but it was actually Febuary 2003 that was listed on her old website and March 2003 as well so I thought she was probably recording volume 2 or her demo CD songs or something. She could've been recording the acoustic demo to it though, I always wondered if that was on volume 1. She probably just went back there a year later for that. She wasn't living in TN yet and she probably went there to record all her old demos (aside from the RCA ones anyway) because it was close. By the way, I saw your comment on my video, it just won't let me reply to it on my YouTube app. I have more clips of that, I'll have to look at them and see if I can make out the lyrics to Sugar but aren't all her V2 songs pretty much the same on guitar though? They all sound really similar I'm guessing because she only knew three chords. Steve says he thinks that could be possibly the first song she wrote lead guitar for though. And speaking of guitar, I heard that the guy who taught her to play (Ronnie Cremer) was one of the first people outside of her family to hear The Outside after she wrote it. I'm not sure weather or not that's actually true but she probably kept in touch with him because he was friends with her parents and I think he gave her actual lessons (not just one, but like two or three weeks worth) because she said in an article in Wood and Steel (the one that's too small to read) that it took her a couple weeks to learn those three chords but once she did, she wrote her first song. She took lessons when she was younger too (that's why she had the guitar already) but she wasn't very interested in learning it by note the way he was trying to teach her and he told her her fingers were too small to play a 12-string guitar anyway so she kinda gave up on it for a while. Good thing he happened to ask her if she played huh?! -Alyssa

lynleet09 says... I think she actually wrote it when she was thirteen. She could think in her mind she was twelve because she just turned thirteen at that point. In January 2003 she would have been thirteen for a month.
Yeah, that's what I think too. She would've been in 7th grade when all that was going on and that sounds like the exact event she was talking about at that point in the song when she mentions being 13 and her friends being mean, window shopping with her mom, etc. I remember reading in a magazine article from April 2010 that that day at the mall inspired that verse in The best day and it sounds like something that could've inspired a song like The outside too. I think she just goes by memory with her ages sometimes. And yeah, that is the part I was talking about. Can you see the date on it? I'm pretty sure it says January 2003 and in other clips near it she's in front of a Christmas tree so that's what I was thinking. Those clips have always made me think of The outside anyway though, I always imagined she could've been singing that or some old unreleased song. I even used them in a music video I made for the song. But yeah, even if she was 13, it could've still been one of the first songs she ever wrote because she could've learned to play guitar and write songs later in the year so she might've only been writing for a few months at that point so maybe only written a few songs by then. Or maybe a few to her is like less than 50 because she's written so many songs by now! lol -Alyssa

PLEASE POST THE ARTICLE SCAN!!! YEAH!! I know what you're talking about! Is it that clip of her with her hair in a bun and she's wearing a green hoodie type thing?
